Photo Number 515

I purchased this photo at the antique shop in Detroit Lakes, Minnesota.

Nuns DL Antiques

Nuns in some kind of a procession.  I wonder if they are coming from some kind of service on top of the hill since there are people up there.  If you enlarge the photo by clicking on it, you will see that there is a  young man part way up in the tree.  The children are watching and looking bored.  One of the ladies has one of those cloche hats on that was popular in the 1920’s..yet none of the men have hats on, perhaps they are holding their hats in their hands.

  3. These pictures remind me of the nuns and the habits they wore at my church growing up. I was mesmerized by their large rosaries that hung from their waists. And was thrilled if I ever caught a "peek" of their hair. I had fond memories as they were always having fun and laughing with us and yet still being "holy" at they appropriate times.
Thanks for stirring a nice memory.

  4. I don't think they go around dressed like this anymore.

  5. With the weather warming up around me, I have to think of how hot they must have been. Not even a breeze though their hair.

  6. My first thought regarding the men's hats is that men weren't allowed to wear hats in Catholic churches, and women HAD to have some sort of head covering, up until at least the late '60s. However, this procession is outside, so I don't know if that's the case here. Perhaps the ceremony was during or just after Mass, and they didn't have chance to put their hats back on...? Either way, what a great photo! Thank you!
