Photo Number 514

This is a photo that I purchased at one of the Antique Shops in Dorset.

Nun postcard in folder It was in a folder.

I took it out of the folder to scan the entire image.

Nun postcard

Was it taken in 1956, perhaps.  The Nuns face and hands have been partially tinted. The photo is on a postcard, that says “Made in Germany” on it and there are some lines for a message..but of course there is no message and no name.

I thought this was an appropriate “Good Friday” photo. Thanks for stopping by, do come again:)

  1. this is beautiful and more stunning (if possible) without the surround.

  2. 1956? I don't think so - more like 1916, I think.

  3. It is a beautiful picture - and your banner is really impressive with its inclusion.

    Happy Easter.

  4. do you think this is the only way a nun would have herself photographed at this time? The cross doesn't seem to be a prop most photographers would have at that time.

  5. I believe this is a depiction of one of the saints in the Catholic church. They were images used on sacrementals called holy cards. This could be St, Catherine, St, Teresa or possibly others. I could be wrong, but I have seen very similar images.

  7. I remember doing some research on the habit and wimple nuns wear, and they were not the dominant clothing after WW2, although you still would see nuns wearing them. I suspect this photo is much earlier than the 1950s. The wimple (head covering) completely covers her and drapes down her back, which is closer to 19th century (and earlier) styles. The white habit was worn at a convent I think in Pennsylvania but I can't remember clearly. I think I might have posted the research here in a comment, actually.

  8. Wow! What a stunning picture very well lit. Do you think she is a real nun or a modle used for the shot?
