Photo Number 464

This is a CdV that I purchased at a quaint little Antique Mall in Grand Forks, North Dakota.
Ann Foster Haines GRand Forks CdV
I can never pass up the ones with names.  This one says Our Grandmother Ann Foster Haines. How old do you think she is in this photo?  I am encouraged by the OUR part..that must mean that there are several Grandchildren.
Ann Foster Haines back
This is the back of the CdV   J. Bainbridge at No. 28 Broad Street Trenton, N.J.  The Street address was a big clue.  This photographer was at this location from 1873 to 1877.   So we will date this photo right at 1877.

I did a priliminary search..was her name Anna or Ann? Was her maiden name Foster or is it a middle name?  I believe her married name is Haines. ( Because of a photo I will show you tomorrow.)

There are a few Ann Haines out there..which one is the right one?

This week we we look at photos that all have names..maybe we will find some relatives this week for some of the Forgottens.
Thanks for stopping by, do come again:)

Update from Abra:
I did find an Ann Foster married to Samuel H Haines, born 24 Feb 1821 in Trenton, Burlington Co, NewJersey, died 17 Aug, 1881, in Rowley, Buchanan, Iowa. I wonder if she traveled back to visit family, as I believe you are correct with the photo dating as late 1870s (which seems to fit with her age), but she was living in Ohio/Iowa in the 1850s already. It appears there were at least five children. This is the Haines family according to the 1860 census: Samuel(38)born New Jersey; Ann(39)born New Jersey; Edward(14), born New Jersey; Elizabeth(9)born Ohio; William (5) born Ohio; Susannah (3) born Ohio; Olive(1) born in Iowa. Samuel Haines was a farmer, and had real estate valued at 2400, and personal estate of 400. This was the second highest real estate value in Homer Township.

Ann's daughter Olive Haines was married to a gentleman named Zimri S. Hain, and the children all(5) have the last name of Haine. They lived in Muscatine IA. I don't have time to do the full search right now as I headed off to work, but it appears at least one of Ann(e)'s grandcildren died in MN. (There are several family trees, as well). ~Abra

  2. Thanks Abra, I think that this is probably the line we want..tomorrows photo is Susanna Haines Webster..she married Abel B Webster. They had a daughter Hazel Webster Byrnes born in 1886 in Charles City, Iowa:)

  3. Goodness - Abra was busy! I was thinking this one was going to be difficult and she goes and pulls the rabbit out of the hat (again!)

The Haines/Hain/Haynes family moved to New Jersey from New England a long, long time ago (1700's) and there are a larger number of them in the area.

I came back to look at the picture and see if there were any other clues - I would say she looks about 55-60 years old (so her birthdate would be 1820-30 based on your photo dating). At first I thought she might be dressed in black mourning clothes or plain Quaker dress - but I see that is not the case -

Trenton is no longer in Burlington county in case someone gets confused - it is now in Mercer county which was founded in 1838 and carved out of other surrounding counties.

I was looking at another Ann Haines (Birth: Oct. 9, 1825 Death: Oct(Nov?) 8, 1895) who was the wife of William Haines but agree that Abra's "selection of Haines" is much more likely.

  4. I found another family tree that has two additional children born after 1860 census: Lucy & Emma. I am excited to see tomorrow's photo. I bet there are many descendants! I should be able to contact someone through a number of family trees, but I would want to make sure it is "the closest" relative. ~Abra

  5. What a great find. I went to school close to Trenton. I believe the family was connected with the First Presbyterian, that is also located very close to Broad St (the address on the back of the photo). Perhaps the two are related somehow?

    Just my 2¢.
