Photo Number 427

Page 26 of the Nettie Parks Album.

Page 26 Unknown Man An unknown gentleman, who had his photo taken by B E Goldsberry in Red Oak Iowa.  It is a cabinet card with the most exquisite border of tree branches and birds.  I have not seen one quite like this one before.

Thanks for stopping by, do come again:)

  3. That must be "good ol' cousin" Unibrow!

In an effort to date the photo, I tracked down Benjamin E. Goldsberry:

    He was born 1853 to Mary M. (Jones) Goldsberry (b. 02-22-1825 d. 09-22-1898) and James H. Goldsberry (b. 1833 d. 03-10-1904) of Ottumwa, Iowa.

1870 US census shows him "working on parent's farm" in Ottumwa, Iowa at age 16.

1880 US census shows him living in Bedford, Taylor County, Iowa married to Anna E. (Lida) with the occupation of "Degarian Artist" and one year old son Charles H. Goldsberry.

1895 - Moved back in Ottumwa, Iowa - his mother was in failing health.
    1898 - His mother died
1900 - Now has daughter Ola (b. Mar 1881) and living in Chariton, Iowa
1905 - Only son Charles H. married d in B. E.'s home on Main Street in Chariton
    1910 - in Omaha, Nebraska
    1920 - in Omaha, Nebraska
    B. E. Goldsberry dies on 09-21-1922 in San Francisco, California were his son had moved earlier.

He took many (most?) of his photos in Bedford, Iowa including one of Sitting Bull (http://www.worthpoint.com/worthopedia/antique-collectible-original-b-w-photo-of-sitting)

His son's wife was from Red Oak, Iowa - so he may have lived there for a time. I can't pinpoint when but would guess around 1893-4. Would this be a good date for the photo?

  4. "Spanish-American War 1898-1899, Those Who Returned At Close Of Philippine Campaign"

51st Iowa Volunteer Infantry - Roster of Company M

Goldsberry, Charles H. Age 21. Residence Red Oak, nativity Iowa. Enlisted June 13, 1898. Mustered June 13, 1898. Mustered out Nov. 2, 1899, San Francisco, Cal.

I'm thinking B. E. moved from Bedford to Red Oak in towards the end of 1890 and was there "on and off" until 1900. If this so, this photo might be dated closer to 1896-9 like some of the others in the album.

  5. What do you suppose happened to all the negatives and equipment from these photographers you feature?

  6. Hi Maybelline..I suppose equipment was sold with the business, photography was a really hard profession to make a living from. Eventually it was probably discarded as the photography techniques changed:(
