Photo Number Thirty-One

I call this one "fingerless gloves".  I was curious about the gloves called mitts..they were popular in the 1800's  and perhaps these were handed down in her family..and she was a weird duck and wore them for her photograph.  I also read where organists wore them..and ladies that smoked..OR perhaps this is a wedding photo and the gloves are her something old?  Confirmation photos were usually taken holding a Bible or a song book..and she looks older than say the 15 year old that would have been confirmed.  I believe this is probably a photo taken about 1910.  Please leave me a comment with your thoughts!
Thanks for stopping by, do come again:)

  1. Perhaps they were a status symbol?? Maybe she crocheted them herself and was really proud of them!! It's fun to imagine the reason. Because of your blog, I have been thinking about my little great nieces and the clothes they are presently being photographed in. Normally it would not occur to me that say 100 years from now someone will be looking at and wondering about their clothes!

  2. I believe the photo was taken for graduation or Confirmation. I have several old Confirmation photos that were taken without any props (Bible, etc.)

  3. She looks really uncomfortable getting her photo taken or maybe it is the holding still part that is doing it. Her dress must have required a great deal of sewing work with all that lace. I've never seen this type of glove before. LOL Except for the ones my daughter wore as a kid and that was because she hacked the fingers off with her scissors.

  4. She sure doesn't look happy if this is a wedding photo. Of course, if I was 15 and getting married, I don't think I would be happy either!! Hopefully it is a confirmation photo instead.

  5. It looks like a graduation. The dress is interesting as they use to buy them like that and roll up the lace to the right height, then let it down as the grew taller.

  6. I am of the graduation or confirmation opinion as well. My totally uneducated guess is about 1915, only based on some photos I once saw of my paternal grandma & her sisters (similar style). However, I think I may have some earlier photos on my maternal grandpa's side that are of a 1904-05 family wedding and the younger sister may have been dressed similarly. ~Abra

  7. I have no guess on the year this time. I was just noticing that on the left sleeve in the picture you can see a faint shadow of her arm, suggesting this is a sheer sleeve. The quality of the fabric must have been very fine! She also appears to have a big white bow peeking out on either side of her head, leading me to believe it's a graduation photo also.
