Is this gentleman wearing a boater hat? I like her hat also...this is a post card. On the back it says James Maude ( not James and Maude...could it be James Waude? Some of this penmanship sucks. ) In the spot where the stamp goes it says Artura.. four different ways to form the square for the stamp. It says that it is from Post Card Shop, No. 7 Sixth Street, Minneapolis, Minn. Penny Arcade, 110 W. Superior Street Duluth, Minn
I guess now I must research how to date a postcard. Boater hats were popular from 1870 to 1900.
Thanks for visiting! Stop by again! :)
*** Update: Here is a view of the back of the postcard. I finally got around to scanning it! I found out that this postcard dates from 1908 to 1924 :)
Don't know that I've ever seen a hat quite like his. You have some amazing photo finds Connie. This is so fun to speculate on.
ReplyDeleteI like the way it looks like the Lady has her arm around the gent. He looks pleased. I love these old pictures. Thanks for using them.

He is looking quite dapper and she looks real snazzy as well. They must have been having a good time from the looks of their smiles.
ReplyDeleteI found an old photo of my grandpa and his sister. My grandpa is holding a boater's hat, as well as a bouquet of flowers & his sister is also holding a bouquet. My grandpa was born Dec 10, 1901. My great-aunt was born Jan 30, 1905. To me, he appears to be about 7 or 8 in the photo, and her, 4 or 5. That would put that boater hat into the 1908-1909 range, a little later than they were supposedly popular, but fitting in with the dating update of your post card. I'll probably post that photo on my blog sometime this weekend if I get an opportunity, so you can compare hats. ~Abra
ReplyDeleteI also have an old postcard with exactly the same information on the back, altura, post card shop, no. 7, and the Duluth penny arcade. Mine is a picture of a man standing by and old well( a prop ). His name on the back in Henry Lezzani and he's wearing striped long pants, a collard shirt, maybe a tie, and a buttoned up sweater that is a dark color with a light collar and striping down where the buttons are, and ten topped off with a sports type jacket and hat. I found the photo at an estate sale somewhere in the Duluth/Superior area a few years ago.
